No one came to see me off. I was traveling to visit my mother. I’d been meaning to see her for a long time, and I had finally received the vacation I’d been waiting for.

The journey was going to be long, but I preferred traveling by train. To be honest, I had always been afraid of flying.

The train arrived for boarding. I stepped into my compartment, placed my belongings on the upper luggage rack, and sat by the window. Two older men were saying goodbye on the platform.

Next to them sat an incredibly beautiful Labrador with unbelievably sad eyes.

I looked away for a moment, and when I glanced back out the window, no one was left on the platform. A few minutes later, the same man who had been standing there with his friend and the dog entered my compartment.

As it turned out, we were traveling companions.

The train started moving, but no one else joined us in the compartment.

“What a beautiful dog your friend has,” I said admiringly, trying to start a conversation.

“That’s my dog,” the man replied.

“Where is she now?”

“She’s traveling where the railway regulations require her to be—in a special car, in a designated compartment,” he answered quietly.

His eyes became just as sad as his dog’s.

I could tell he didn’t want to talk, so I left him alone.

At the next major station, where the train stopped for a long time, he spent quite a while walking his dog along the platform. Once the train started moving again, I decided to speak to him once more.

“You know, isn’t there any way the dog could ride here with us in the compartment? Let’s get her out of that awful place. I can see how miserable both of you are.”

The man looked at me with obvious interest.

“But that’s not allowed. The animal transportation rules prohibit it.”

“To hell with those rules. It’s just the two of us here, and I have absolutely no objection to the dog riding with us.

“Would you like me to talk to the conductor?”

“I’ve already tried. It didn’t work. And by the way, she’s not a male dog. This is Barbara, and she’s a true lady.”

At the next station, I managed to persuade the conductor, and we brought Barbara into our compartment, promising that if even one more passenger joined us, the dog would immediately return to her assigned place.

After passing several stations, we were still alone in the compartment—or rather, the three of us were.

Barbara lay peacefully on a soft mat on the floor. Every time she sensed someone approaching the compartment door, she would tense up and bare her teeth.

She was guarding her owner.

“Are you traveling far?” I asked my companion.

He named his destination. He would be getting off three hours before me.

“My name is Vladislav,” my fellow traveler introduced himself. “I’ve just gone to pick Barbara up. She lived with my friend for almost a year. Now we’re finally returning home together.”

Then the man told me his story.

“I was married to the most beautiful, kind, gentle, and desirable woman in the world. We lived in perfect harmony for many years.

“But heaven decided to take her from me.

“I suppose they needed another angel up there.

“She died from an incurable illness, and I lost my entire world because she was my whole world.”

He pulled a photograph from the pocket of his jacket.

The woman in the picture truly looked like a heavenly being with golden hair.

“We never had children,” Vladislav continued, “and I was left completely alone.

“I lost my desire to live. I no longer had any reason to go on.”

Thoughts of entering a monastery—and even suicide—began to visit me.

I wanted to shut myself away from everyone and sink into my grief, which had completely consumed me.

All the questions, all the condolences, all the conversations about what had happened—they were tearing me apart.

“My friend helped me. The same friend you saw at the station.

“He found me a secluded place, and I took a job as a lighthouse keeper.

“There was nobody around for miles—just the sea, cliffs, and seagulls.”

The only connection to the outside world was a small road that ran a couple of miles from my place of solitude.

I used that road to drive to the nearest coastal village for groceries and other necessities.

I immersed myself in studying questions of existence and consciousness. I read books on philosophy, psychology, and even esoteric subjects.

Reading distracted me, at least a little, from the terrible thoughts.

One day, I needed to drive into town.

It was pouring rain, and it was already getting dark outside.

Soft music played in my Toyota.

Suddenly, I noticed that the car ahead of me slowed slightly, and someone threw a bundle—or perhaps a bag—onto the shoulder of the road.

Then the car accelerated and disappeared around a bend.

At first, I thought about human nature.

Couldn’t they at least carry their trash to a garbage bin?

I was about to drive past, but something seemed to stop me.

I slowed down beside the bag.

Inside sat a tiny white puppy who hadn’t even realized what had just happened to her.

The rain was coming down in sheets, and the little one was already soaked.

I picked her up, placed her on the seat beside me, and continued my trip.

On the way, I stopped at a pet store and bought everything a dog might need.

The next day, I took the puppy to a veterinarian to make sure she was healthy.

Several years passed, and Barbara grew into a true beauty.

We became inseparable.

My life filled with meaning again.

We ran along the shore like children, rolled in the sand, and swam in the coastal surf.

Sometimes it seemed to me that heaven had sent Barbara to replace the one they had so cruelly taken away.

But one day, misfortune struck.

I was carelessly descending the steep staircase leading to the very top of the lighthouse.

I became dizzy, missed a step, and tumbled all the way down.

After that, I remember nothing.

Later, people told me what had happened.

Barbara had run to the road and started throwing herself in front of every passing car.

She barked loudly and raced back and forth.

Her paws were worn bloody.

But eventually, she managed to lead people back to the lighthouse.

They found me and rushed me to the hospital.

I had suffered severe injuries.

Almost an entire year of treatment and rehabilitation followed.

Fortunately, my friend took Barbara in.

And now, thanks to the prayers of my guardian angel, I’m healthy again, and my savior and I are finally reunited.

“What an amazing dog you are, Barbara.”

He stroked her head, and she pressed her wet nose into his palm.

At the next station, the compartment door opened, and a young woman appeared in the doorway.

The face from the photograph of his wife was staring back at us.

I had never seen such an astonishing resemblance in my life.

But I also saw the look in Vladislav’s eyes at that moment.

“Would you mind if this wonderful dog rides with us in the compartment?” I asked the new passenger.

“No, not at all.

“I love dogs and am delighted by such a lovely encounter.”

The stranger reached out and gently petted Barbara.

“And what station are you traveling to?” I asked, because Vladislav was incapable of speaking.

The woman named the very same station where my traveling companion and his dog were headed.

“Looks like we’re going the same way,” Vladislav said, unable to take his eyes off her.

“My name is Varvara—Varya for short,” the woman introduced herself. “But my friends just call me Barbara,” she laughed.

“They say I look a lot like the Polish actress Barbara Brylska.”

And it was true.

She had the same beautiful eyes and golden hair.

“My dog is named Barbara too,” Vladislav said. “And I don’t believe in coincidences like this.

“Do you?”

The train rolled steadily along the tracks.

Within an hour of Varya joining our compartment, she had charmed everyone—even the dog.

Barbara rested her head on Varya’s lap, and they traveled that way for almost the rest of the journey.

Love hung in the air. I could feel it in every fiber of my being.

Vladislav and Varvara couldn’t stop looking into each other’s eyes.

When we finally reached their station, all three of them stepped off the train together.

And I continued on my way.

I always thought stories like this only happened in movies and books—that all those romantic clichés and pink unicorns were just the product of the imagination of not-so-talented writers.
