When the police dog spotted this bag at the airport, it began to whine and stare at the border officer, trying to get his attention.

Beirut–Rafic Hariri International Airport is the only passenger and cargo airport in Lebanon. Because of this, it is always crowded with people eager to visit this Middle Eastern country.

Every day, thousands of people pass through the airport’s terminals, and enormous amounts of cargo and luggage are shipped to destinations all over the world. With such a high volume of passengers and freight, security is of utmost importance.

That is why numerous police officers are responsible for maintaining safety and order. But there is another group of law enforcement officers that often goes unnoticed—specially trained detection dogs. These dogs help identify suspicious packages or luggage containing prohibited items. Such items may include narcotics, explosives, or even large sums of money.

These dogs are trained to detect specific scents and quietly “report” them to their handlers without barking or causing a disturbance. When they find something, they focus their nose and gaze on the suspicious object while remaining completely still. The handler notices the change in the dog’s behavior and arranges for the luggage to be inspected. The system is simple, time-tested, and works with remarkable accuracy.

### A Strange Discovery

As one such dog walked through the airport building, no one paid much attention to it, understanding that the animal was on duty. As tempting as it might have been to pet the friendly dog, doing so was strictly forbidden so as not to interfere with its work or distract the police. Therefore, passersby could only smile at the handler accompanying the dog.

Suddenly, in the cargo terminal, the dog fixed its gaze on one of the crates passing through the facility. The shipping label listed Kazakhstan as the point of origin. The package had arrived several days earlier and was waiting to continue on its route.

The dog froze, silently staring at the crate.

The police officer had no doubt that something unusual was inside.

The detection dog rarely made mistakes. In the officer’s experience, it had never incorrectly singled out a passenger or a piece of cargo.

The handler gave a command and allowed the dog to move closer. Unexpectedly, the dog jumped onto the crate, which was fairly large.

It looked just like the other crates and boxes arriving at the airport, so visually it did not appear suspicious. The only difference the officer noticed after a very careful inspection was a series of small holes around its perimeter.

The dog could barely contain its excitement. It moved restlessly and whimpered softly while glancing at its handler.

It became clear that whatever was inside the crate had attracted the dog’s attention even more strongly than illegal substances or large amounts of cash. The handler began considering his next steps and preparing for an inspection.

### What Was Inside?

Other airport employees had already gathered around the crate. They carefully lifted it from the floor and gently carried it to an inspection table. Everyone understood that explosives could potentially be inside, so they proceeded with extreme caution. Any careless movement could have led to serious consequences.

Before taking any further action, a bomb disposal unit was called in to scan the contents. The likelihood of explosives was relatively low because the crate had been at the airport for quite some time and had already been inspected more than once. Still, no one wanted to take any risks.

Everyone present left the room and waited for the bomb squad to complete its work. Only the detection dog kept trying to return to the crate, which was very unusual for such a highly trained animal. The handler had never seen this kind of behavior from his partner, despite working together for many years.

The service dog’s strange reaction sparked all kinds of concerns and theories in the officer’s mind. What could possibly be inside that crate?

While the bomb squad conducted its scans and checks, the police discussed their next steps. They decided to open the crate slowly and carefully.

When they finally did and looked inside, they were stunned.

These officers had seen a great deal in their lives—money, drugs, explosives, and smuggled goods of every kind imaginable.

But they had never seen anything like this.

### Little Prisoners

Inside the crate were…

…two tiny tiger cubs.

They were hiding among wood shavings and looked extremely weak and malnourished. It was obvious that they had suffered greatly and had been trapped inside the box for a long time.

No wonder the dog had been so desperate to reach them.

The cubs were terrified by the bright light, the noise around them, and the crowd of people inspecting the filthy crate. No one could say exactly how long they had been inside, but it was clear that it had been a very long time—several days without food or water.

Their waste was everywhere. The wood shavings were soaked with urine, and worms and insects crawled along the walls of the crate. It was astonishing that no one had noticed the foul-smelling box earlier, because once it was opened, the odor was overwhelming.

Animal protection authorities were called immediately. Their representatives took the tiger cubs and transferred them to a specialized shelter, where they received the medical care they desperately needed.

At first, it seemed unlikely that the animals would survive after such a traumatic ordeal. The fact that they had remained alive inside the crate at all felt like a miracle.

The cubs were named Tobby and Sophie—a boy and a girl. They were allowed to stay at the shelter, where they could finally receive the care and treatment they deserved. Fortunately, they were not separated and were allowed to remain together.

As for their origin, police discovered that they had been sold from a zoo in Kazakhstan and were part of a litter of five cubs.

Thankfully, the fate of these two ended well. What happened to their brothers and sisters remains unknown, as they were likely shipped to different destinations.

The zoo director was arrested and sentenced to a lengthy prison term.

Unfortunately, this kind of animal smuggling still occurs today, with animals transported in conditions that completely disregard their safety, health, and well-being.

And so, thanks to a hardworking detection dog that faithfully performed its duty, two little tiger cubs were rescued and given a second chance at life.
